Building A Global Climate Justice Movement

FINDING OUR “JUSTICE RIGHT ROLE”
AS CLIMATE ACTIVISTS

We are building a global climate movement! For an encouraging tour of how climate change activists all around the world are responding to this ecologically critical moment with transformative commitment, invest some unhurried time in exploring the 350.Org video library right after you sign up for the 350.Org mailings.

Here is a brief video summation of both our core climate problem and the part you and I can play in its resolution:

“Climate Crisis” (3:44)

Did you watch the full “Occupy Love” film yet? If not I encourage you strongly to find the one hour, twenty five minutes and forty five seconds required to do so. Woven within that film you will find many of the principles of effective Climate Justice Activism being put into action. Perhaps most importantly the film reflects upon this fundamental truth of Spiritual Activism, so eloquently articulated here by Dr Martin Luther King (0:58):

“What is needed is a realization that Power without Love is reckless and abusive.
(but)
Love without Power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is Love implementing the demands of Justice.
(therefore)
Justice at its best is Love correcting everything that stands against Love!”

Finding our personal path to effective Climate Justice Activism is no small task. How do we go about exercising real power in a spirit of authentic love?

With thanks to the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, here are some principles to guide our engagement with the movement for climate stabilization through the pursuit of climate justice.

Note: All the numbered principles below are live links to related material.

1) Respect and Protect Human Rights

2) Support the Right to Development

3) Share Benefits and Burdens Equitably

4) Ensure that Decisions on Climate Change are Participatory, Transparent and Accountable

5) Highlight Gender Equality and Equity

6) Harness the Transformative Power of Education for Climate Stewardship

7) Use Effective Partnerships to Secure Climate Justice

Keeping in mind these key thoughts on how to pursue climate justice successfully, as well as the Principles of Spiritual Activism touched on earlier in our Imagine Peace and Plenty conversation with you, how shall we, then, find that “just right” role for our selves as Climate Activists – that niche in the movement that feels like – socially, spiritually and politically – “This is my Home and these Trustworthy Allies are Family”?
